Sarah, the powerful new feature film by S.A.F.E. Kenya , is set to make its highly anticipated Kenyan debut. Directed by Nick Reding, and produced by Sarah Tenoi, Nick Reding, and Amos Leuka, this coming of age story brings to light the complexities of family, tradition and gender rights within the Maa community.
RELATED :
While Sarah is a work of fiction, it is deeply personal, based on the lived experiences of women in the Loita Hills – the remote Maasai community where the film is set. Inspired by 18 years of work by SAFE Maa, the Maasai-led branch of Sponsored Arts for Education (S.A.F.E. Kenya), Sarah tells the story of a young Maasai girl facing the life-altering decision of whether to follow traditional rites or pursue her education. Through deeply personal storytelling and a cast of first-time actors, the film sheds light on the evolving conversations around FGC (Female Genital Cutting), early marriage, and the fight for girls’ rights.
SARAH will be screening at The Pan Africa Film Festival on 11th & 14th February . See more details here
The film had its World Premiere at the Pan African Film Festival (PAFF) in Los Angeles on February 11th, 2025, and is already gaining international recognition. Sarah’s upcoming Kenyan premiere is more than a homecoming, it’s a powerful moment for African storytelling and a call to action.
Through collating all of the conversations, debates, and discussions with Maasai women and men that
had taken place over the many years of implementing the FGC abandonment project, our aim was to
create a story that explained the journey towards abandonment and highlighted the obstacles that are preventing full abandonment in the Loita Community.
