The Durban FilmMart Institute (DFMI) is delighted to present the 2023 DFM Industry Programme, now live and available for viewing on our website. Now entering its 14th edition, the 2023 DFM will be held from the 21st – 24th of July, under the theme African Constellations, which will highlight the talent and diversity of the African film industry.

KFC ANNOUNCES WINNERS OF “MY KENYA MY STORY” MOBILE PHONE FILM COMPETITION

The Kenya Film Commission on Friday June 9th 2023 announced the winners for the 6th edition of “My Kenya My Story” Mobile Phone Film Competition. This year’s theme was “Promoting Peace, Tolerance and Conflict Resolution” which is in line with the Government’s agenda of educating the Kenyan public on the importance of promoting a dialogue centered approach to conflict prevention and resolution and establishing a culture of peace and tolerance. AFRICA’S REALNESS INSTITUTE, NETFLIX NAME 12 PARTICIPANTS FOR 2023 EPISODIC, DEVELOPMENT SCHEMES

African development organization, the Realness Institute, has selected 12 participants for its 2023 Episodic Lab and Development Executive Traineeship (DET), in partnership with Netflix.

The two cohorts each comprise six participants from Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya, Botswana, and Zimbabwe.

The Episodic Lab participants include Amanda Gicharu and Juma Adero (Kenya), Emil Garuba (Nigeria), Gabe Gabriel, Jason Staggie and Vanishia Kisten (South Africa).

They will work to refine their skills as episodic screenwriters and develop their story ideas, and will have the opportunity to pitch their stories to Netflix content executives at the end of the program. Continue Reading

Al Jazeera English has launched the third season of Africa Direct — African filmmakers, telling African stories — directly. Big World Cinema is contracted to manage the series, commissioning African filmmakers across the continent to produce short form documentaries that challenge dominant narratives about their complex, diverse and changing continent. The series will be 8 x 25 min episodes, each made up of 2 or 3 short documentaries. Big World Cinema will also be hosting a workshop for the shortlisted filmmakers, either online or in person, subject to funding.
