Durban FilmMart 2024: Announcing Headline Speakers and Masterclasses The 15th annual Durban FilmMart (DFM), is scheduled to take place from 19th to 22nd July 2024 in Durban. This year’s event, themed “African Visions Unleashed: From Disruption to Accountability,” promises to be a significant gathering for film professionals.

DFM 2024 will feature an outstanding lineup of industry leaders in its In Conversation and Masterclass series. These sessions aim to provide in-depth insights and specialized knowledge, celebrating the achievements of notable film professionals while guiding the next generation of filmmakers.

Additionally, the masterclass programme will feature industry experts such as Chris Mack from Netflix International Originals, Nicola Ofoego from Black Mic Mac, and Stanislas Renaudeau d’Arc from Frogbox covering essential topics from character development to marketing strategies and animation.

Leonard Amanya’s unwavering passion for cinema, coupled with his extensive experience in various film-related roles, positions him as a revered figure in the African cinema industry. He is a curator, juror, producer, and advocate for the continued evolution and excellence of the African cinema.

Q: What do you like most about your job as a producer/director?

A: I enjoy the creative process of bringing stories to life on screen. Collaborating with talented cast and crew members to create meaningful, impactful films is incredibly rewarding. Seeing a project evolve from an idea to a fully realized film and sharing it with audiences around the world is a fulfilling experience.

Q: What do you consider your artistic process when it comes to making a film?

A: My artistic process involves a deep researching of the story idea, storyline, the Story theme, the structure and the characters. As a Creative, extensive research and scripting can never be ignored because that’s the foundations of a good storyline. I always ensure that the narrative is authentic and resonates with audiences. I work closely with the cast and crew to develop my vision fort he film, from visual style to emotional tone. Throughout production, I strive to create a collaborative and supportive environment that allows team members to contribute their best work.

Q: Why did you start making films?

A: I have always been passionate about storytelling and the power of cinema to inspire, entertain, and impact my community. Making films allows us to express our creative thoughts and share stories that have a profound impact on audiences. I am able to contribute to the cultural and artistic landscape and make a difference through the stories I tell.

Q: What are you currently watching?

A: I like to stay updated on the latest trends and movements in cinema, so I watch adverse range of films from around the world. Recently, I have been exploring independent indigenous films with unique narratives and innovative visual styles. I’m keen on looking out for upcoming filmmakers and their projects, as they often bring fresh perspectives and ideas to the industry.

Q: Any advice to those starting out in the film industry?

A: For those starting out in the film industry, my advice is to stay passionate, patient and persistent. It’s important to continuously hone your craft, seek out opportunities to learn and grow, and network with others in the creative industry. Don’t be afraid to take risks and tell stories that matter to you. Be open to feedback and collaboration—working with others can help you achieve your creative vision and succeed in the Cinema world. Above all, keep God closer to your heart.
